Sound

During this programme of study, pupils will:

  • compare and group materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases
  • observe that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled, and measure or research the temperature at which this happens in degrees Celsius (°C)
  • identify the part played by evaporation and condensation in the water cycle and associate the rate of evaporation with temperature

The rock stars of the world need your help! They want their children to come to their concerts and rock-out, but they want to protect their precious ears! During this block of Science, children will explore and identify the way sound is made through vibration and find out how the pitch and volume of sounds can be changed in a variety of ways. Thinking scientifically, the children will design ear defenders, investigating which material provides the best insulation against sound.
