English

During daily English sessions, teaching focuses on developing children's skills in comprehension, composition, vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, transcription and handwriting as outlined in the National Curriculum with an emphasis on developing pupils' enjoyment and understanding of language, especially vocabulary, to support their reading and writing.

During daily reading and writing sessions, children have the opportunity to experience rich and diverse texts, generating curiosity and encouraging the exploration of language, and how meaning is created through the choices we make. The knowledge of language, gained from stories, plays, poetry, non-fiction and textbooks, will support the children's increasing fluency as readers, their facility as writers, and their comprehension.

Alongside the Babcock English Teaching Sequences, each term's curriculum themes and Science programme of study will provide the context for both fiction and non-fiction reading and writing as part of English and in other subject areas across the curriculum.
