Animals, including humans

During this programme of study, pupils will:

  • describe the simple functions of the basic parts of the digestive system in humans
  • identify the different types of teeth in humans and their simple functions
  • construct and interpret a variety of food chains, identifying producers, predators and prey

Excuse me, are these your teeth? Who did this poo? Am I a predator?

During this block of Science, children will find the answers to these and other peculiar questions about digestion and food chains.

  • Learning about the first stage of the digestive system, children will consider why our teeth are different shapes and have different functions.
  • Using everyday objects to demonstrate the human digestive system, children will begin to understand the human digestive system and be able to describe the simple functions of the basic parts of the digestive system in humans.
  • Using physical activity to demonstrate an understanding of the functions of each part of the digestive system, children will become the small intestine.
  • Comparing the diets of different animals, children will use the evidence of the food they eat to answer questions and discover who did this poo and what we can learn from poo!
  • Applying their understanding of producers, predators and prey, children will interpret food chains and discuss the impact of changes to a chain.
  • After listening to Dental Experts explain the importance of our teeth in the digestive system, children will plan and perform a healthy teeth assembly to an invited audience.
