The Significance of Reading and Establishing Positive Daily Routines
In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the significance of reading and cultivating positive day-to-day routines around it should never be underestimated. Reading not only helps children feel safe, happy, and secure but also plays a crucial role in fostering their personal, social, and emotional development. During this stage, children are encouraged to explore and find enjoyment from listening to, narrating, and acting out stories. They should become acquainted with the beginning and end of a story, as well as the accompanying pictures and characters. This exposure models storytelling and introduces them to diverse and enriching language content. Continuing the reading routines established in the Reception year is paramount. In Year One, children progress from their initial phonics phases to develop into more confident, fluent, and skilled readers.
Alongside daily teaching sessions, children are provided with regular opportunities to practise phonics skills within a meaningful context. Following Bug Club Phonics recommended schedule for in-class reading practice sessions, in Reception and Year 1, children read their phonics book at least three times a week, focusing on three re-reads to enhance fluency. These in-class reading practice sessions can involve 1:1 reading with an adult or group sessions, with additional daily reading practice sessions available for children requiring extra support. To consolidate these skills, we recommend three readings of your child's phonics reading book each week at home.

We want to create a world where everyone is reading their way to a better life. Research shows that reading for pleasure can promote better health and wellbeing, aids in building social connections and relationships with others and is associated with a range of factors that help increase the chances of social mobility. As parents and carers, you have the power to nurture a love for reading at home. By setting a positive example through your own reading habits, you can inspire your children to do the same. Children often emulate the behaviour of adults around them. Dedicating 15-20 minutes each day to reading with your child is recommended. Many families find bedtime an opportune moment to incorporate this activity into their daily routine. Furthermore, sharing a book together each day can further strengthen the bond between parent and child, fostering a deeper appreciation for reading.
At Shiphay, we place a high value on instilling a love for literature from a young age. To support this, alongside your child's Bug Club Phonics Reading Books, your child will also be given a Reading for Pleasure book to take home and enjoy each week.
