Curriculum Rationale: What is taught?

At Shiphay, RE is planned using the Devon and Torbay agreed syllabus.  The principal aim of our RE curriculum is to explore what people believe and what difference this makes to how individuals lead their lives, so that pupils can gain the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to handle questions raised by religion and belief, reflecting on their own ideas and ways of living.

RE is legally required for ALL pupils in Primary Education from Reception – Year 6.

‘Religion’ encompasses both religious and non-religious beliefs, as well as EQUAL RESPECT to different religious convictions.

Implementation - what does Religious Education learning look like at Shiphay? 

• To contribute to pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
• To encourage an understanding and appreciation of different faiths and beliefs.
• To develop respect and empathy for people of different cultures and beliefs.
• To develop a coherent understanding of different religions through systematic teaching, that builds effectively on prior learning as they progress through school.
• To understand the impact of beliefs on the everyday life of some people and make connections between different faiths.
• To become responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society.
• To become confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives.
