Welcome to Middle School
Our Middle School Team at Shiphay consists of Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4. With two classes per year group the team is made up of over 190 creative and aspirational children. The children usually share the same curriculum theme each term and regularly collaborate together to develop and share their learning. As well as sharing our learning with each other, we try to invite Parents into school on a regular basis to allow them to see what we have been learning too. We are always very proud of our learning in Middle School and love each opportunity that we are given to share it with others.
The start of the Autumn Term saw the children settling into their new classes and environments well during their fun-packed Welcome Weeks. These weeks had a particular focus on wellbeing and took a pupil centered approach. The children also thought about what talents and skills they already have, and these were celebrated as well as planning what they aspire to achieve. Class representatives for the Pupil Council, Eco Council and Sports Council were all elected.
Autumn Term Theme: A Local Study:
For Years 2 & 3 this is Dawlish Warren and for Year 4 it is the River Teign.
Despite the mixed weather, trips to Dawlish Warren and the River Teign took place, giving the children the opportunity to visualize and explore their local study area. Important facts and details were learnt and the premise for the next steps in their learning set. These trips have supported the children having first-hand experiences of the geographical and scientific features that they are learning about.
Back in the classroom, there has been lots of art, research and quizzes to further and consolidate the children’s learning.
Already this term the children have had a range of sporting events including learning their multiplication tables through PE activities, Tag Rugby at the Boys Grammar School, an introduction to Beat the Street and their favourite, familiar activity of the Golden Mile. This is alongside the children’s weekly PE lessons which have consisted of hockey, gymnastics, multi-sports and dance across the three year groups.
Year 4 is looking forward to swimming lessons later this term. Years 2 and 3 will enjoy these opportunities later in the year.
